Russia and China strengthen ties to promote correct WWII history
As the world approaches the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in 2025, China and Russia have vowed to uphold what they see as the historical truth of the conflict and resist any attempts to distort its legacy. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently underscored this commitment, emphasizing the sacrifices both nations made and their key roles in shaping the post-war international order. His remarks reflect the deepening strategic ties between Beijing and Moscow, particularly amid growing geopolitical tensions with the West.
During a press conference on March 7, Wang Yi highlighted that both China and Russia suffered immense losses and contributed significantly to the victory against fascism. “Both nations paid huge national sacrifices for the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and made significant historical contributions,” Wang stated. His words align with the long-standing Chinese and Russian narratives that stress their critical roles in defeating Axis powers and shaping the post-war world order.
Wang further noted that the upcoming anniversary presents an opportunity to “promote the correct view of the history” of WWII, defend its results, and reinforce the international system centered around the United Nations. In this regard, Russia and China seek to counter what they perceive as historical revisionism from Western nations, which they argue distorts the Soviet Union’s role in the war and downplays the contributions of non-Western allies.
