Symbols of our people
Democrat-Gazette online
Writing about events unfolding in Israel and Gaza is a pickle for a person like me who does not trust Donald Trump. And it's more than just not trusting him. I detest what he has done to denigrate our country and the office of the presidency. I abhor worse, I suppose, that we the people have enabled him to do it.
But I am thrilled there is a ceasefire and the hostages have been released. And although it is hard for me to give credit to someone who gives himself hyperbolic amounts of credit for accomplishments he does not own, I want to celebrate wins for our country and humanity. And I want to be a big enough person to give credit where credit is due.
Trump played an enormous role in this wonderful event. My heart caught in my chest as I watched one Israeli mother grab her son who was returned from captivity. I watched her take off his hat, feel his hair, press her face to his cheek. She was me; she was every mother. Breathing him in, smelling him, making sure he was real. I saw Palestinians rejoicing. One man said that no matter how difficult it........
