Don't blame Gov. Hobbs for how she's handling the border

Elvia Díaz, a respected journalist, leader and well-known champion for justice, recently leveled a harsh rebuke at Gov. Katie Hobbs.

Díaz believes the governor‘s response to President-elect Donald Trump’s provocative statements on immigration and deportations is too muted.

I share her frustration on the politicization of immigration. But I respectfully disagree about assigning the blame to a governor that has been on the right side of this issue more than once.

The elections have reintroduced fear in vulnerable communities that remind many of those dark days of Senate Bill 1070, when families were ripped apart, jobs lost and the economy damaged.

As the leader of the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, I and my members share Díaz’s concern about what could happen next, if history is any indicator.

I am also hopeful that things will be different this time, because we have a different governor now than we did during SB 1070.

Not only has the governor been a vocal advocate for humane, comprehensive immigration reform, but she also has led on numerous issues of significance to our state and........
