Although World War I officially ended, June 28, 1919, the fighting had stopped several months earlier “…when an armistice…between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.”

President Wilson originally declared Nov. 11 as Armistice Day, according to the Veterans Administration. Through legislation, more than 71 years ago (on June 1, 1954), Nov. 11 became Veterans Day–a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
