The pandas’ secret warning of World War III (maybe)

In today’s edition:

“When we put politics aside, what we are left with is life.”

This lovely nibble of a sentiment comes from Sergio Peçanha’s new project that has him canvassing a politically split community about the questions that really matter this fall: What’s your favorite color? Have you ever had your heart broken? What symbolizes hope for you?

In other words, Sergio says, “anything and everything” other than what an election cycle would have us expect from a person-on-the-street interview.

This is how Sergio came to meet singer-songwriter Melody, Tim with the bright pink umbrella and hopes for a new career, and Jason, whose big beard made Sergio assume he was conservative but who actually just turned out to be a bear (the gay kind, I should clarify; real bears appear later in this newsletter).

Sergio illustrates all these meetings in his usual whimsical style. It’s a helpful, optimistic tool for visualizing the sort of ideology-agnostic encounters that might at times........
