In 1923, a lost dog miraculously walked from Indiana to his doorstep in Oregon. Here’s how.

There was nothing out of the ordinary about the Braziers. The husband and wife, Frank and Elizabeth, were visiting family in Wolcott, Indiana, in 1923. They decided to bring along their 2-year-old Collie dog, Bobbie, on the roughly 3,000-mile road trip from their hometown of Silverton, Oregon.

They’d made it the entire way without incident, having stopped at many hotels and car parks along the way. But at a gas station in Wolcott, Bobbie was chased off by a couple of aggressive dogs. He ran out of sight and didn’t return. Frank and Elizabeth couldn’t find him, despite staying in town an extra day or two to continue the search.

Even though they were thousands of miles from home, they had to make the heartbreaking decision to leave him behind. Six months later, “Bobbie the Wonder Dog” showed up on their doorstep.
