Letters Oct. 7: Deer at Ross Bay Cemetery; follow Julian Daly's plan
Re: “Victoria council reaffirms support for downtown policing,” Oct. 3.
The story didn’t grasp the subtleties of Victoria’s motion titled, “Affirming the City’s Enforcement-related Priorities in Collaboration with VicPD”.
The story gives the impression this motion was to ensure our new police chief knew Victoria councillors were behind her.
In fact, upon my reading, it was a way for councillors Jeremy Caradonna, Matt Dell and Dave Thompson to let voters know that despite their policies and behaviour of the past three years, this was a signal to voters that (surprise!) we now want to enforce our laws.
Clearly this “suck up to the voters” wasn’t lost on Coun. Stephen Hammond, who, tongue in cheek, tried to add into their notion, “motherhood and apple pie.”
Hammond said that “in the event my actions on council have led residents to think I don’t support motherhood and apple pie, I want to ensure this is on the record. If I run in next year’s election, I want this on the record.”
In this clever way, Hammond was able to mock these three members of the “Gang of Five” and call out their ridiculous waste of time trying to correct their pitiful lack of support for safety, not only downtown, but throughout the city.

I don’t like to bring it up, but someone forgot about the three families of deer that munch along the edge of the Ross Bay Cemetery need space as well.
Their butts often stick out on the road as they are oblivious to what is going on around them and in the press.
Winter nights will be real dangerous for traffic to adjust to our four-legged friends with no spare space.

I don’t live on Mann Avenue but I use it two to three times a week while travelling from Royal Oak/Broadmead to my home near Strawberry Vale in Saanich.
The bike lanes on Mann seem totally unnecessary. I have never seen a bike using them!
I truly feel sorry for the residents on Mann who have lost all their street parking.
Mann used to be a wide, quiet road with little traffic.
Why complicate it with all these chaotic bike lanes?

Re: “Blame the boomers for the anti-bike-lane rants,” letter, Oct. 3.
I am Gen-X, not a Boomer. I am happy that we live in a country where people can choose........
