Letters Oct. 11: James Bay traffic; we need safe bike lanes

“As people move up, cheaper homes available,” letter, Oct. 4.

I am fortunate to be a senior who could afford to live in Amica Jubilee so please know that my letter is not based on envy or frustration that I could not afford such expensive housing.

My anger about Victoria Coun. Dave Thompson’s letter is based on the experience of my hairdresser, who was one of the Ashgrove tenants.

Over these past two years, the stress she was under was clearly visible, including how it negatively affected her already precarious health. I tried to communicate my concerns to council, and was only referred to their staff member liaising with the Ashgrove tenants.

I spoke with the staff member a few times and was touched by her concern for the tenants. Her frustration with the situation was also evident as there was little she could do to help.

To me, there was little to no similar concern evidenced by city council.

With their approval of the Official Community Plan, I am truly concerned as to how much more already-existing middle housing will be demolished and how many more tenants will be evicted and negatively impacted as a result of decisions made by the council majority sextet.

A city spokesperson, Colleen Mycroft, was quoted regarding the two-way traffic along the stretch of Dallas Road with the new protected bike lanes. She said she believed people would slow down on that stretch of road and drive more carefully because the road would seem narrower.

She also stated that because that stretch of road is less travelled, it should not........
