Consider qualities of old Niskayuna logo

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the suggested Niskayuna logo. I feel the unique qualities of the old logo are not being recognized. No other community has the headquarters of GE’s Research Center, one of the largest research centers in the world.

We also have an excellent school system as part of the intellectual treasure in the town, a wide residential focus and that the town’s name derives from an Algonkian-Mohican word, “Canastagione.”

The word is spelled different ways, but it defines a small area noting that corn was grown in our area along the Mohawk River.

Admittedly, the teepee is not proper, but some other way of representing this could be found. The bird is beautiful, but bird lovers like me have seen the same bird in many other locations.

The original logo was designed by local artist Robert Banks. The research lab oversaw production and gifted the town with flags for all public buildings and many to sell to raise funds. The map on the logo defined the town limits and also had a nuclear symbol to recognize KAPL, a business in Niskayuna to design and monitor building of nuclear submarines.

Is the proposed change necessary? An elderly gentleman who regularly would stop at town hall questioned that whenever we were considering changing the logo. He would ask, “Is it broke?” We might say no, but we might find a better way if we made a change. He replied, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Sound advice.
