Remember, we’re a family of immigrants
When my grandfather, Sam, was a small boy living in Russia, his mother learned the Cossacks were coming to round up conscripts.
She said to his teenage brother, “Hide in the cabinet!” Turning to Sam she said, “Shh, don’t tell anybody where your brother is hiding.” When the Cossacks came, one of them looked straight at Sam and said, “Tell me, where is your brother hiding?” Sam pointed to the cabinet. The Cossack pulled his brother out and took him away. He was never seen again.
My grandparents decided they didn’t want that for their children, so they sailed to “America” in the late 1800s when immigration was open to all.
Today, there’s an annual cap on the number of visas issued to immigrants, creating a backlog of millions of people waiting for permission to come here for job offers, education, or to join........
