EDITORIAL: Go back to basics on ice safety

When it comes to safety, we humans don’t often spend enough time breaking down the conditions to their basic elements. For instance, when it comes to going out on a frozen body of water.

It seems like a simple thing. If you see ice, and it seems thick enough, it’s safe to go out on it.

But when you think about it for a second and break it down into its basic elements, making any assumptions about the safety of ice is foolhardy and potentially dangerous.

Ice formation on any body of water is unpredictable, dependent on sun, shade, varying temperatures throughout the day and night, and snowfall. It depends on the depth of the water, the topography, aeration, and the flow of water in, out and within the body of water at various........
