EDITORIAL: Boost standard for nuisance noise in Schenectady

If you work in construction or mow lawns or play in a band, you have to put up with loud noises.

But if you live next door to a neighbor who plays the music really loud or shoots off fireworks or is constantly using his leaf blower — disturbing the solace of a Saturday afternoon in your own backyard, waking you up when you have to get up early for work, disrupting your kids and torturing your pets — then loud noises shouldn’t be the price you pay for living.

That’s why Schenectady City Councilman Carl Williams says it’s time to update the city’s penalty assessment system to determine what qualifies as a public nuisance when it comes to noise.
