EDITORIAL: A lot is riding on Hochul's "State of the State" message
If Gov. Kathy Hochul went into detail about every potential solution she could offer for every problem in New York, she might still be delivering today’s scheduled State of the State message well into the weekend.
But the governor can only propose so much in a short speech and can only accomplish so much in a legislative session that includes 2-1/2 months of haggling with the Legislature over the budget.
Given the desperate state of New York’s financial position, economy and level of resident satisfaction, and given Hochul’s low approval ratings as she heads into next year’s potential re-election campaign, voters are going to expect her to propose a big agenda that produces big........
