Belfast doesn’t need more restaurants, it needs more variety
THERE are few things Belfast does better these days than food.
Over the last decade the city has transformed into a destination for people who enjoy eating out. New restaurants seem to open every few weeks, visitors regularly praise the quality of what is on offer, and there is no shortage of talented chefs producing excellent food.
On paper, that should be a success story, but lately I’ve found myself wondering if, in growing our food scene, we’ve sacrificed some of its diversity.
Of course, Belfast has some brilliantly unique restaurants. The city is home to several chefs doing genuinely exciting things and some of the best meals I’ve had in recent years have come from places willing to take a slightly different approach.
