IN May this year, the British Medical Journal reported that 30 US psychiatrists and other doctors specialising in mental health have signed a statement declaring Donald Trump mentally unfit to serve as president.

The doctors called for Trump’s immediate removal from office, arguing that he presents a “clear and present danger” to the whole world.

This is the man who is coming to Ireland next month, so in view of a medical opinion on his mental health, how should we treat him when he arrives?

Should he be welcomed, praised, humoured, insulted, laughed at, protested against – or just ignored?

You will have your own view, but perhaps the most reasonable way to decide how to react is to examine how Trump and his government have behaved in recent years.

So, why is he coming? The answer lies in November’s mid-term elections.

Only 35% of Americans now support him and for the first time in nearly a decade, Democrats are more trusted with handling the economy than Trump’s Republicans.

Therefore it is time for him to visit the old sod and appeal to the Irish vote in America.
