In the past few days, former British prime minister Gordon Brown and former taoiseach Leo Varadkar have issued comments on whether Irish unification is inevitable.

This follows a more clumsy set of remarks from the incumbent prime minister, Andy Burnham, about whether a border poll is on the table.

On the pro-unity side, this always gives a strong sense of hope and optimism that this conversation is being taken seriously and has some momentum.

This is especially true when someone like Gordon Brown, who played a decisive role in helping the Better Together campaign win the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, speaks about the potential for constitutional change.

Part of the discussion has moved on to how inevitable Irish unity is.
