Erica Schwartz is one step closer to being the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after clearing a key procedural hurdle on Wednesday.
The Senate voted 51-43 to end debate on her nomination, clearing a path for a confirmation vote later in the day.
Schwartz would be the first Senate-confirmed CDC director in nearly a year. The agency has been under acting leadership since Susan Monarez was fired last August after what she described as a clash with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over his attempts to roll back childhood vaccines.
