The World Cup proved immigration is a balance of multiculturalism and assimilation

Lost in the fervor of the World Cup that has gripped this country over the last month and a half, one of President Trump’s retweets slipped under the radar for most people.

Of course, we live in an age where the president can post vile things and no one will bat an eye, but this one was really troubling. It turns out that Trump and some of his followers were mad that the children of Somali immigrants were having a graduation ceremony from kindergarten … while wearing hijabs.

It turns out religious expression is horrible in the eyes of MAGA when its not Christian nationalism. But it was also telling that people skipped over the fact that these kids were participating in a graduation ceremony, in a public charter school, wearing caps and gowns. It turns out when you turn off your fear based goggles of intolerance, you can see these kids are participating in our society, which is exactly what we ask immigrant families to do.

The war between liberals who call for multiculturalism and conservatives who rally for assimilation was completely wrecked by the fact that the World Cup proved that the U.S. is a country where both happen at the same time. The cliche that sports brings people together is true, and we saw a wide variety of fans who were both distinct in their culture but unified in their love for their team and country. This was especially true for American soccer fans. Many of us root for the U.S. but also have a soft spot for other teams. Plenty of........
