The Onion says it’s reached a deal to take over Alex Jones’ Infowars

(NewsNation) — The Onion says it has reached a deal to take over Infowars, the website founded by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

Ben Collins, CEO of The Onion’s parent company, Global Tetrahedron, announced the deal in a post on BlueSky Monday, saying it was made with the help of the Sandy Hook families.

The satirical news site posted a video declaring “the new Infowars is here,” with comedian Tim Heidecker serving as “creative director.”

The deal — which still requires a judge’s approval — would have The Onion’s parent company pay $81,000 a month to license Infowars.com and its associated intellectual property from Gregory Milligan, the court-appointed manager of the site, according to The New York Times.

The licensing deal would last for an initial six months, with the option to renew for another six months, the Times reported. The Onion and the court-appointed administrator have agreed to the plan.

Collins told CNN that the company has also signed a deal to purchase the full assets once the current judicial stay expires.

It’s not the first time The Onion has tried to take over Jones’ website. The outlet’s previous effort was scuttled by a bankruptcy court in 2024.

Jones lost a defamation lawsuit in 2022 after he propagated conspiracies that the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre was a hoax and the families involved were paid actors. He was ultimately ordered to pay roughly $1.5 billion in damages and later declared personal bankruptcy.

The Sandy Hook families have been fighting to collect on those judgments ever since.

The Onion plans to share the proceeds of its merchandise sales with the Sandy Hook families, Collins said.

Jones is also expected to lose access to his studio and equipment as part of the deal, Collins told the Times.
