‘You can’t be that soft’: Konstas can shake off Gambhir sledge. He will get smarter too
For a 19-year-old with two Tests and 113 runs to his name, Sam Konstas’ headline-to-highlight ratio might just sit alongside his slew of records as one of Australia’s youngest ever players, the youngest Test cricketer in 117 years at the SCG, and the first teenager to take on a nation of 1.5 billion people.
Defeated Indian coach Gautam Gambhir helped add yet another incident of note, in the wake of Konstas throwing his wicket away after a ballistic 17-ball innings on Sunday.
“You can’t be that soft,” said Gambhir – who was once suspended for a mid-pitch elbowing of Shane Watson – in response to Andrew McDonald’s defence of his teen opener’s day-one run-in with Jasprit Bumrah.
McDonald called out India for what he described as a “quite intimidating” celebration in Konstas’ face as Australia’s openers looked to stall for stumps on day one, an incident that ICC match referee Andy Pycroft did not take any action over.
Gambhir also gave the incident short shrift.
“It’s a tough sport played by tough men; you can’t be that soft,” Ghambir said after Australia reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a six-wicket win.
“I don’t think there was anything intimidating about that. Usman Khawaja was taking his time and he [Konstas] had no business being involved with Jasprit Bumrah.”
