Postpartum psychosis is a serious mental health disorder that, left untreated, can have fatal effects.

The mental health system appears to have failed Clancy in its treatment of her alleged postpartum psychosis.

The Lindsay Clancy case recently ended in a mistrial where 11 jurors believed that she should be acquitted due to insanity based on the defense of postpartum psychosis. Therefore, with the jury deadlocked, Judge Sullivan declared a mistrial. The prosecution has yet to announce whether it will retry the case and there could be a new trial with a different jury. We will have to wait and see.

However, regardless of how one views the case, in all of its polarization, it sheds light on the very real phenomenon of postpartum psychosis and how the mental health system may be failing women suffering from this disorder.

Facts of the Lindsay Clancy case

In January of 2023, Lindsay Clancy, a wife, mother, and labor and delivery nurse, was accused of murdering her three children by strangulation and attempting to kill herself by jumping off her second-story balcony, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. By all accounts, including her ex-husband Patrick, as well as colleagues, friends, and family, Lindsay was a dedicated mother who was extremely loving with her children. But sometime in 2022, Lindsay began showing signs of mental deterioration in the months leading up to the killings. Patrick testified that his ex-wife was struggling and began telling him that she was experiencing symptoms of extreme anxiety and depression. He stated that two months before the murders, Lindsay told him she was feeling suicidal and expressed thoughts of hurting the kids.
