I’ve always been intrigued by the idea that each of us may have been put on this planet for some particular purpose. Reflecting on my career journey, I see a clear throughline that convinces me I was meant to do this work.

Virtually every religious tradition has some version of the belief that human beings arrive in the world with unique gifts and a particular capacity to contribute. Even if you don't subscribe to the idea that our destinies are predetermined, it’s difficult to deny that people come into the world with remarkably different dispositions, interests, talents and ways of seeing the world.

And some people seem almost perfectly matched to the work they eventually choose.

Think about people like Steve Jobs, Dolly Parton, or Anthony Bourdain. Try to imagine any of them spending their lives doing something entirely unrelated to what ultimately made them remarkable.

It's almost impossible—not because we believe they were magically destined to become exactly who they became, but because their work seems to have given expression to something already deeply imbued in them.

Jobs uniquely integrated design into technology, making complex products intuitive. Parton transformed the hardships of her impoverished childhood and her extraordinary gift for storytelling into enduring songs. Bourdain's curiosity, irreverence, and appetite for understanding other cultures changed how we all think about food, travel, and the people who cook our meals.

We needn’t stretch to say that any of them were “born” to become who they became; but they were clearly born with qualities that, shaped by life experiences, made their pursuits unusually compatible with who they were.
