From Working With AI to Connecting With People
AI communication lacks courtesy; humans need emotional intelligence and patience.
Inefficiencies in human interaction build relationships and improve future teamwork.
Engaging one's senses to transition from AI mode to human conversations creates effective interactions.
You’ve been locked in with AI for the last hour. “No, shorter.” “Try again.” “That’s not what I meant.” “Go back to the first version.” No greeting or thank-yous change the conversation. It’s not necessary to soften your feedback or wonder if you hurt its feelings. You’ve covered an impressive amount of ground, and everything has moved at your pace.
Then, you close the window and walk into a meeting with actual people. Someone wants to tell you about their weekend. Another person needs more context. Someone starts brainstorming when you thought you were there to make a decision. You can feel yourself getting impatient. The gears have shifted, and suddenly, you can’t get what you want at the pace that you want it anymore. There are complexities, nonverbal communication to decode, and emotions alongside the words. Now you’re dealing with humans, and humans require something different from you.
We already know this, of course. We naturally adjust how we communicate depending on who is in front of us. You probably don’t talk to your boss exactly the way you talk to your best friend, and you may not talk to the person who cuts your hair the way you talk to your partner. Different relationships bring out different parts of us and require different levels of patience, context, humor, restraint, and awareness. This is part of the art of human conversation. We read tone and nonverbals. We remember what went well last time and what didn’t, and that helps us adjust.
