Thinking Is the New Luxury

AI can hand us the answer, but it can't hand us the thinking that produced it.

Struggling with an idea changes you while a generated paragraph does not.

When everyone can fake the artifact, real thought starts to look like a luxury.

Let's start with a history lesson.

There was a time when deep thinking was much more a luxury than a choice. Back then, being an intellectual required resources that were just unavailable—books, education, and, importantly, time itself. That time was typically defined by toil and the practical realities of living (not thinking) life. The luxury of thought was itself a type of privilege or even a royal indulgence.

Times have changed. Modernity has pushed against that reality as the education of society, in many instances, has become an important goal. Education became available, local libraries were built, and universities became accessible. And the internet shifted the scarcity of information to, what some call, a level of abundance. Thought, at least for the moment, had found itself.
