The longing to tidy the house is often a longing for ease, safety, or competence as a parent.
Waiting for a partner to notice what you need keeps the need unmet and builds resentment over time.
When bedtime drags on, the child's need for connection is almost always what's underneath it.
In the first post in this series, I talked about how what parents call needs are often strategies—one specific way they're hoping a real need will get met. "I need the house under control" points to a need for ease. "I need you to unload the dishwasher" points to a need for support or partnership. When you can name the real need underneath the strategy, more solutions become available and you stop needing everyone else to change before things can get better.
Here are seven things parents commonly call needs, and what's actually underneath each one.
1. "I need everyone to stop talking to me."
Real need: Rest or mental space.
When this shows up, the need for rest and mental space is likely severely depleted. A moment of quiet and solitude can help you re-regulate and reconnect with what you actually value as a parent.
One thing to try: Build a two-minute buffer between one demand and the next. Before the day starts, or before you walk back into the house after work, pause and ask yourself: "How am I doing right now? What is my energy like?" Then adjust what comes next to match your actual capacity rather than the capacity you wish you had.
2. "I need the house to be under control."
Real need: Ease, safety, or competence.
A chaotic environment makes it hard to think and hard to feel steady. Getting things "under control" is one strategy pointing to a need for ease. There's also a social layer: we expect others to judge us by the condition of our homes, and the longing to tidy is sometimes a longing to feel competent as a parent.
