When the Tool Becomes the Threat

The typewriter had resistance. You had to mean it. Then it got easier.

I write with a pen, a stylus, my voice, and sometimes a machine that cleans it up.

Someone changed the speed limit and added a zero at the end.

The question came from 46 years of listening, not from any machine.

I remember the typewriter in my father's office. The keys were hard to push all the way down. The letters wore away on what I thought was marble but was probably just plastic. There was a click to it. A resistance. You had to mean it.

Then the electric typewriter arrived and everything got smoother. Easier. Something like the difference between a stick shift and an automatic, or a bicycle and a motorcycle. Things were gained. Things were also lost. We........
