Postpartum depression can change its form over the course of a single illness.

It can feel like fear, grief, overwhelm, or guilt about asking for help.

A listener or a therapist who expects only sadness can miss fear, shame, irritability, or grief.

One insight I have shared for many years with medical students, psychiatry residents, and young psychotherapists is deceptively simple: the disorders we name in our diagnostic systems have many faces.

We know, of course, that one person’s depression is not another person’s depression. But there is something else we sometimes forget: One person’s depression is not always even the same........
