Whenever you are trying to change something in your life, advice for how to do it seems to be everywhere. Well-intentioned people tell you to “Try this method” or “Follow this routine” or “Build this habit,” and honestly, it’s exhausting.

Strategies from my kind-hearted and well-meaning friends were often followed by motivational speeches with more advice like, “Keep going,” “Don’t give up,” and the worst: “Try harder.” As a neurodivergent person, I have felt baffled for much of my life, trying to do things that seemed easy for other people. Rarely do I ever need to be told to “Try harder,” because my problem isn’t lack of effort. More often than not, the problem is simply that all of their great advice made sense to a brain that functions differently than my own.

Each time this kind of exchange would occur, my tenacious inner skeptic would come alive, and before someone could even finish their sentence, I was already thinking,........
