Having a Hard Time Changing a Behavior? Here’s Why.
Resistance blocks us from changing behaviors, but we can overcome it.
The change model helps identify the cause of resistance in order to work through it.
We've all been successful at changing behavior and can do it again.
Change is good, it helps us evolve and be better versions of ourselves.
As I’m writing on this beautiful summer day, the sky is blue, the leaves are green, and the temperature is warm. The topic is on change, which usually corresponds with fall and the changing of the leaves. Self-improvement and growth need not wait for the changing of the season. It should happen when we recognize that we are stuck in a behavior and we want to fix it. People often put off change to a later time, like next week, next season, or the ever-popular New Year's resolution. We often call that procrastination, but it’s actually called resistance.
Resistance is what blocks us from working on the behaviors that we know we should work on. We’re all familiar with the word, but most of us aren’t aware of what causes it. Resistance is caused by being low in one or more of the five elements of change. The change model is a powerful tool in our own growth as well as understanding it in others. Each element either propels us or hinders us in our development. The neat thing about the change model is that we’ve all used it in the past........
