Time plays a paradoxical role in romantic life. Every moment with a beloved can feel precious, yet romantic intensity often wanes as relationships endure. This apparent contradiction points to two important truths: time can deepen love even as it reduces some of its intensity. A crucial step in resolving this paradox is to distinguish between timing and time. Timing can be pivotal for romantic intensity; time is foundational for romantic profundity.

Timing Is Not Everything

We often hear that timing is everything in life and love. Yet the reality is more nuanced. Timing concerns the particular moment and circumstances in which something happens; time, by contrast, refers to duration, repetition, and development. Timing can be decisive in bringing people together and igniting attraction. Time becomes increasingly important in developing and sustaining enduring love.

Romantic timing may involve sheer luck. Two future lovers happen to meet on a train, at a party, or while traveling. The awareness that they could easily have missed each other can make their encounter seem extraordinarily fortunate. But timing may also involve skill: recognizing and responding to the right circumstances at the right moment. In both cases, timing concerns relatively brief periods. Sometimes, a single decision can alter the course of a relationship. Timing is particularly important in generating intense sexual experiences. This may help explain why quickies, makeup sex, and breakup sex can be remarkably passionate: sexual desire is highly sensitive to circumstances, novelty, emotional states, and timing.
