COMMENTARY: P.E.I. community treatment order too restrictive

The P.E.I. community treatment order was legislated in 2023 under the Mental Health Act. This order assists individuals with a mental illness by ensuring medications are taken to maintain wellness. A psychiatrist signs the six-month CTO and a team provides ongoing wellness supervision.

The CTO is a preventive treatment measure enabling a person to live in the community, work and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. The CTO essentially stops the revolving door hospital admittances. The CTO is very cost effective compared to a hospital bed.
