Building an Intelligent CPEC Through China-Pakistan AI Cooperation

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s speech at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) presents a forward-looking vision in which artificial intelligence serves human development, shared prosperity and common security. His call for openness, responsible innovation, cultural inclusiveness and stronger global governance provides an important framework for expanding cooperation between China and Pakistan, particularly under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

With the new phase of CPEC now moving towards industrialization, innovation, green development, connectivity and people’s livelihoods, AI can be a key technological enabler to support this new phase of transformation. China has achieved a great deal by exploiting its successes and if this is applied to Pakistan and its development needs, the two nations can develop a more intelligent, efficient and people-centered economic corridor. On the other hand, President Xi pointed out that AI is moving from the virtual to the real and is becoming a new growth power for the world’s economy. The observation is particularly pertinent in the context of CPEC. The corridor is not just for roads, energy projects and physical infrastructure. It can further incorporate digital technologies, intelligence management systems, the development of manufacturing techniques and smart logistics and data-driven public service systems in its future development. In China, the value of AI is greatest when it is linked to the real economy. Through the AI Plus Initiative, China has promoted the application of artificial intelligence in manufacturing, transportation, agriculture, healthcare, energy, education and urban management.
