Hochul’s smart subway deployment

Let’s say you have a problem. It’s getting worse and no one is doing much about it. Then someone with authority steps in and takes action. Finally! But then, the very same people who were either doing nothing to help and the people who created the problem in the first place all start complaining about the solution. You should side with the one person who’s actually trying to help you, right? Of course you should.

That’s exactly what we’re facing right now with Gov. Hochul’s decision to send 1,000 State Police officers and National Guard troops to patrol our subways a week after a train conductor was slashed across the neck on the A train. In this real life scenario, us — the general public, the people who actually ride the subways — are the ones with the problem: the trains are not safe. Hochul is the person who stepped up to help. And in a case of strange bedfellows, the NYPD joined with a litany of anti-police critics as the complainers.

As the homeless and mental health crises have gotten worse, our subways have become more dangerous. In January, felony crime was........
