‘Big miss’: Skipping T20 World Cup in India a blunder from Bangladesh, says Shakib

"We are a cricket-loving country and a country like Bangladesh not participating in the World Cup was a big miss. It's a blunder from the government's side that they took the decision not to participate," Shakib said.

New Delhi: Bangladesh government erred in not allowing team to participate in T20 World Cup in India, said former captain Shakib Al Hasan.

Bangladesh refused to play their group games in India citing security concerns and requested relocation of matches to tournament co-hosts Sri Lanka.

The International Cricket Council turned that request down leading to their pull out, with Scotland replacing them.

“I think that was a big loss. (It was a) great miss as far as Bangladesh cricket is concerned because we, as a country, love watching our players play World Cups and play (those) matches,” Shakib said.

“We are a cricket-loving country and a country like Bangladesh not participating in the World Cup was a big miss. It’s a blunder from the government’s side that they took the decision not to participate.”

The all-rounder hoped Bangladesh’s stance won’t damage bilateral relations with India permanently, pointing out that a couple of series might be needed to normalise the situation.

“I think things will get better. Obviously, efforts need to be made and I think one or two series, if Bangladesh visits India or India goes to Bangladesh…(they are) playing a series which I heard might happen in August or September,” he said.

” If that happens, I think the ice will break and things will get better.”

A Member of Parliament for the Awami League, Shakib has stayed away from Bangladesh since Sheikh Hasina’s government was ousted last year. Criminal cases hover over his name as he has decided to stay away due to security concerns.

Yet, he still pins for one farewell match, having represented his country in 71 Tests, 247 ODIs and 129 T20Is.

“We will see that later. But, yeah, I think things will start getting better sooner or later. With time, everything heals, so I’m hopeful that I can get what I want,” the left hander said.
