Explained: What changes once Uttarakhand becomes first state to implement UCC
The countdown for implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand started after the Pushkar Singh Dhami Cabinet approved the UCC rules. It is expected that the Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in Uttarakhand soon. Implementation of UCC in the state has been Dhami’s prominent poll promise in the 2022 Assembly Election. It is believed that this new law can come into force from Republic Day on 26 January.
The citizens have also been provided the facility to lodge complaints on the UCC portal after registering. The complaint can also be tracked through the registration number. Special arrangements have been made for this in rural areas.
The rules of UCC in Uttarakhand have been divided into four parts which are marriage and divorce, live-in relationships, life and death and succession. With the implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand social evils and ill practices like child marriage, polygamy, and divorce will be curbed in the society. However, the implementation will not affect the culture, beliefs or customs of any religion.
It has been clarified in the rules that all the people living in live-in relationships will have to register within one month of the implementation of the code. This registration will be done only in front of the registrar. A late fee will be charged if the registration is not done by the prescribed date.
