Peru votes after a decade of chaos, can this election break the cycle of political instability?

Peru heads into a crucial presidential election after a decade marked by nine different leaders. With the successive changes in governments, often within short terms due to political uncertainties, many do not see elections in Peru as a long-term fix to their problems, but only as a temporary reset before the next crisis.

New Delhi: Peru is heading into a high-stakes presidential election, as general elections are currently being held in Peru on 12 April 2026. 

The presidential elections will determine the president and the vice presidents, while the congressional elections will determine the composition of the Congress of Peru, which will return to being a bicameral legislature with a 60-seat Senate and 130-seat Chamber of Deputies.
