New Delhi: The US Air Force airmen conducted a routine test of a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from the Vandenberg Space Force Base at 12:01 am Pacific Time on 21 May. The Minuteman III ICMB is a 50-year-old part of the US ‘nuclear umbrella’ or deterrent architecture of the US Air Force Global Strike Command. Over 300 similar tests have been conducted in the past, to validate and demonstrate that the US nuclear deterrents are up to the task. The ICBM was pulled randomly from the Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana. The performance of the system was evaluated using radar, optical and telemetry data.
