Opinion | Why TMC’s 'Eggcesses' Have Led To 'Eggstraordinary' Reactions
Rotten eggs as the weapon of choice for infuriated local people targeting TMC leaders and cadres have been a defining feature of the public backlash in Bengal.
Those who lived through the fall of the Communist regimes at the end of the 20th century would have a feeling of déjà vu: the elation of people at being freed from the yoke of authoritarian rule; the violent expression of that ‘liberation’ — remember the end of the Ceaușescu couple in Romania — amid an avalanche of evidence of egregious abuses of power by the charmed circle; and corruption that led to the unbelievable accumulation of wealth by a few. This is also Bengal, circa 2026.
