I'm not Gen Z but I love a bit of Wednesday Addams - the reboot remains darkly comic
Okay, I’m most certainly not the target audience for Wednesday, (Netflix, Wednesday, of course). But because I’m not Gen Z doesn’t mean I don’t love a little nihilism with my teen drama. And as expected, the return of Wednesday was deliciously sprinkled with caustic sugar, Jenna Ortega’s character delivering a series of dark comic lines. “Wednesday Addams is here. That’s ‘Addams’ with two Ds. Like ‘padded room.’”
Yes, the world-weary teen with the psychic powers who refuses to blink is back for a second series, the progeny of Gomez and Morticia, all creatures first created in comic book form by Charles Addams and now picking up over 250m viewers. This week we learned that Wednesday is now the saviour, and unlikely heroine, of Nevermore Academy. “Can I have your autograph?” asks a hopeful new school friend. “I only sign my name in blood,” says Addams. “I would expect nothing less.” “I never said it was my own blood.”
What’s so refreshing about this Addams Family reboot is it’s entirely content in the darkness, reflecting the honesty of thought which appreciates that not all young people’s television world is fixated with Emily in Paris-like characters who feel compelled to speak in fixed smiles. And it’s more than a little refreshing to see a formidable female character who can put insipidness in its place.
