I loved Mrs Brown's Boys but it is time for it to be put out of its misery

I’m about to make a suggestion that it won’t be universally well received, (and produce accusations of international class hypocrisy); the BBC should truss Mrs Brown up (figuratively) with her thick hose American tan tights and have her crated back to Ireland, to whichever subscription platform will have her and her Boys.

I’ll come to the reasons why, but first deal with the immediate yelling in the ear. ‘Hang on!’ you cry. ‘Didn’t you once write the biography of Brendan O’Carroll? Like the journalist midgie you are you sucked the lifeblood out of his North Dublin hide - and now you’re all but leaving him for dead?’

Yes, it’s true, I was once a Mrs Brown fanboy. And hopefully by explaining why this will lead onto the reasons why the sitcom, which once pulled in 11.2m viewers, should no longer be licence fee supported.

Mrs Brown’s Boys was an immensely clever adaptation from O’Carroll’s massively successful, incredibly funny stage shows in which the writer/performer cannibalised his very best bits, his plots and sub plots, his sight gags and deliberate corpses.
