Here are seven infamous Scottish characters who would make great Hollywood movies

Where do these American superstar actors get off, thinking they can come over here and appropriate our identities, our sun burnt skin, and our unsubdued bonkers heroism?

No sooner have three strapping Scots lads rowed 9,000 miles across the globe than Marky Mark Wahlberg smells the salt air in his nostrils and the strong whiff of money to be made. “You’re badasses doing something no one else would think of,” he said to the indomitable Maclean brothers. This could be a movie.” And he added; “No way I’d row an ocean, but I’d play one of you guys in a movie.”

You would, would you, Mark? In recent times your President has been talking about taxing non-American movies, even those featuring Scots superheroes and you’re working up your Popeye muscles to produce a film based on the exploits of our (now) world famous clean water campaigners.

And let’s not forget, Mr Wahlberg; Hollywood doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to producing Scots stories. Take Braveheart. Now, it’s been argued that Mel Gibson’s telling appealed to the proto-fascist psyche, and while this may be a little extreme, it did feature an awful lot of silliness.

And what of Brigadoon? It’s been argued that tuneful Broadway musicals do not readily invite ideological analysis, yet while that may........
