The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has become one of the largest on record, with more than 7,200 confirmed cases and close to 3,500 deaths as of mid September 2026, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and national authorities.Declared in May 2026 and caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola virus, the epidemic now spans seven provinces and 62 health zones, prompting WHO to classify it as a public health emergency of international concern.
