Goodbye PCOS, Hello PMOS

For a long time, we have called a condition affecting one in eight women ‘Polycystic Ovary Syndrome,’ or PCOS. This name has caused a lot of confusion, making people believe it is just a simple problem with a woman’s ovaries. Recently, doctors and scientists officially changed the name to ‘Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome,’ or PMOS. This is a huge victory for women’s health because it finally corrects how we view this condition. For the lakhs of girls across the Kashmir Valley, where research by institutes like SKIMs shows that nearly 30 percent suffer from this condition, this change is a massive shift. The new name acknowledges that this is a whole-body hormonal and metabolic storm, not just a few simple cysts on an ultrasound. It forces doctors to look past the ovaries and treat the entire person.
