The 27-year-old, of no fixed abode, was also unable to give Norwich Magistrates’ Court an address to be bailed to after claiming he could not remember where his brother lived.
He pleaded not guilty to stealing a £1.35 energy drink from Aldi in King’s Lynn on January 31 and an item worth £1.38 from Farmfoods on February 28.
Ordering the Lithuanian national to remain in prison until his next hearing on March 17, District Judge Matthew Bone said: “I’m very aware you are accused of two very low value shop thefts, however you also failed to appear in court on March 5.”
He added he could yet be resentenced at Cambridge Crown Court for breaches to a conditional discharge imposed for multiple offences which may result in the “real prospect of a custodial sentence”.
