Town centre's £24.3m transformation hit by sewer snag

The comprehensive redevelopment of Lowestoft town centre as part of a huge £24.3m scheme of works has been held up ahead of the final build phase.

This newspaper can reveal "a considerable change in market conditions" and the discovery of a "fundamental utility issue" has led to plans being reviewed.

A risk was identified with building over a large, established sewer that runs through the site and serves "a significant catchment area of Lowestoft."

East Suffolk Council - who are overseeing the project - said issues "beyond our control" had pushed back delivery of a new cultural quarter in Lowestoft town centre.

It means the work is due to be completed in 2027 - a year later than originally expected.

But the council vowed the largest of the town's projects will be completed - as revised and updated plans for the "exciting Cultural Quarter development" are now being progressed.

The development around the former Battery Green multi-storey car park, Marina Customer Services Centre and surrounding land on Marina Road earmarks a new cultural quarter for a site measuring 1.20ha, previously described as "unattractive and underutilised".

It would create jobs, drive footfall, "transform and diversify" the town centre and enhance its appeal as a cultural and tourist destination - with a new restaurant, leisure and cultural opportunities on the site.
