Treasure inquest opens after discovery of early medieval pierced gold coin
Norfolk Coroner’s Court heard the pierced gold solidus, believed to date from the ninth century, was discovered on March 18 last year in the parish of Dutton by a metal detectorist.
The court hears the ring was likely made of solid gold and had been deliberately pierced, suggesting it may have been worn as jewellery or used as a decorative status symbol rather than simply as currency. Such finds can provide important evidence about early medieval Norfolk life.
Area coroner Johanna Thompson formally opened the treasure inquest yesterday.
A full expert report, including photographs and historical assessment of the find, is due to be considered by the court on April 1. Proceedings were adjourned to allow further examination.
