Female teachers may have to wear body cameras to curb violence and sex abuse in class

The National Education Union (NEU) has suggested the measure in the wake of the shocking findings of a survey it carried out among members of staff in the county.

This found that nine out of ten female teachers had either experienced violence against them or witnessed it happen to colleagues.

The union says it shows that male pupils are "disproportionately" targeting women members of staff and that much of the abuse they face is sexual in nature.

Among the incidents reported were women teachers having chairs thrown at them, being hit, kicked and stabbed with pencils, and others saying they have been groped.

The findings have left the union fearing a "mass exodus" from the profession unless more action is taken to address the issues.

One proposal is to fit female teachers with body cameras, as worn by emergency service workers, to act as a deterrent and to provide evidence for parents and others when incidents arise.
