Price slump has meant a 'grim' harvest for many farmers, says grain trader
The 2025 harvest brought a sharp variability in yields, with good land providing better-than-expected crops for some, given the exceptionally dry spring and heatwave summer.
But on lighter land there were some "absolute disasters", said grain trader Andrew Dewing, of Aylsham-based Dewing Grain.
And, coupled with the overall slump in yields, prices have also been falling - currently around £23/t lower than the same time last year.
"Some people with really good moisture-retaining soil have got some very good wheat yields, and are very happy," he said. "You get some 12t/ha - that is the absolute top of the tree, but more the exception than the rule.
