Two individuals have been convicted for their "moronic mission" to fell what has been dubbed the "most famous tree in the world". The Sycamore Gap tree, a fixture beside Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland National Park for over a hundred years, had drawn visitors globally.

However, Cumbrian pals Adam Carruthers, 33, and Daniel Graham, 39, decided to target the iconic tree, with one wielding a chainsaw and the other capturing the thoughtless act on film. In minutes, the tree's beauty and historical significance were reduced to rubble. The tree lay lifeless, causing damage to Hadrian's Wall as it toppled.

Their vandalism was recorded on Graham's mobile phone camera, and now the pair, who took a chunk of the trunk as a "trophy", are set to face the consequences of their actions. A jury at Newcastle Crown Court found them guilty of inflicting criminal damage on both the tree and the Roman Wall on the night of September 27, 2023. Sentencing has been postponed until July 15.
