Opinion: Blanket rezoning is not the wedge issue it would seem to be

The war that raged in city council chambers with respect to the future of land use and redevelopment in our communities for the past decade is over. Sure, there are still a few battles and skirmishes left to play out but, for all intents and purposes, the matter is decided.

Repealing blanket rezoning may prolong the status quo for some but won’t change the longer-term outcome for all coming about through local area planning.

With blanket rezoning, the historical promise of zoning has been lost: replacing a single-family house with an eight-unit multiplex has destroyed the stability that many residents thought they had when they bought their homes. Ergo, repealing blanket rezoning has become a top issue in the upcoming election — for both voters and candidates.
